TARTE COSMETICS CLAY PLAY FACE SHAPING PALETTE VOLUME I

26937465_10159785510100612_664352575_o

I GOTTA SAY, THIS IS PROBABLY ONE OF MY FAVOURITE PALETTES OF ALL TIME! I USUALLY AM NOT THAT CRAZY FOR MATTES, BUT WHEN I AM, IT LOOKS SOMETHING LIKE THIS. THIS PALETTE IS AN ALL-MATTE ONE, AND I JUST LOVE THAT I CAN TAKE IT ANYWHERE IT’S NOT TOO BULKY AND I LOVE THAT IT’S PACKAGED PERFECTLY FOR TRAVEL… I DON’T HAVE TO WORRY TOO MUCH ABOUT ANYTHING SHATTERING WHICH I LIKE.  I’M ABLE TO DO SO MANY AWESOME LOOKS WITH THIS, INCLUDING NOT JUST THE EYES, BUT THE REST OF MY FACE. I LIKE TO USE THIS FOR MY BROWS, LINER AND MY CONTOUR AS WELL WHICH IS GREAT FOR WHEN I’M ON THE GO.

I DON’T HAVE ANYTHING BAD TO SAY ABOUT THIS PALETTE SO ALAS, THIS LITTLE MINI REVIEW OF THIS FIRST VOLUME IS QUITE SHORT… IT SMELLS LIKE CHOCOLATE, NOT TOO STRONG WHICH IS NICE, HAS GREAT INGREDIENTS THAT I KNOW WON’T IRRITATE MY SKIN WHICH I ABSOLUTELY LOVE! THE SHADOWS ARE CREAMY AND PIGMENTED, PLUS THE SHADES THEMSELVES ARE GREAT BECAUSE THEY CATER TO SO MANY DIFFERENT SKIN COMPLEXIONS IN MY OPINION… SO MANY DIFFERENT TONES- YOU’RE BOUND TO USE EVERY SHADE IN THIS PALETTE!

THIS PALETTE OVERALL IS SO VERSATILE AND EASY TO USE- I RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE WHO’S LOOKING FOR AN ALL-IN-ONE TYPE PALETTE & WHOM ALSO LOVE THEIR MATTES!

FIRST OFF, I GOTTA SAY THIS PALETTE IS DEFINITELY A BEAUTY. IT HAS THE SAME FORMULA AS THE FIRST VOLUME EXCEPT THAT THERE WERE SOME ADDED SHADES.  VERY CREAMY AND PIGMENTED, A LITTLE BIT OF FALLOUT, JUST TAP THE EXCESS OFF AND YOU’RE GOOD TO GO. THE SHIMMER SHADES ARE ALSO QUITE AMAZING, I’M DEFINITELY LOVING THIS SHIMMERY SHADOW FORMULA! THAT’S PRETTY MUCH THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE PALETTES. IT’S THE SAME EXACT PALETTE THOUGH FROM THE FIRST ONE. NO DIFFERENCE WHATSOEVER. SAME SHADE NAMES- ALL THE MATTES THAT WERE INCLUDED IN THE SECOND ONE ACTUALLY CAME FROM THE FIRST. NO NEW MATTES WERE INCLUDED IN THIS NEWER PALETTE AT ALL! NOT GOING TO SAY IT WAS A “LAZY” PART ON THEIR MOVE BECAUSE THEY MAY BE DISCONTINUING THE FIRST PALETTE APPARENTLY BUT STILL, WHY NOT GIVE US SOMETHING NEW TO FEAST OUR EYES ON TARTE!?

*CLOSER LOOK OF EMBER, ONYX, INSTINCT, TERRACOTTA, DESERT & TIMBER-  INSTINCT IS THE EXACT SAME COLOUR OF MY SKIN, SO I WANTED TO JUST DO A CLOSE-UP TO SHOW YOU, STILL VERY PIGMENTED THOUGH!*

26909997_10159785510320612_704660157_o

SINCE I OWN THE FIRST ONE, I WAS VERY EXCITED TO SEE WHAT THIS SECOND ONE WOULD BE ABLE TO DO FOR ME… UNFORTUNATELY NOT VERY MUCH THOUGH. I HAD THE SAME EXACT MATTES FROM THE FIRST, AND A FEW BEAUTIFUL SHIMMERS… BUT NOTHING THAT I COULDN’T FIND IN MY OTHER EYESHADOW PALETTES, SO THAT WAS A BIT OF A DISAPPOINTMENT. I DEFINITELY WOULD SAY THIS IS A GREAT PALETTE FOR SOMEONE WHO DOESN’T HAVE ANYTHING LIKE THIS OR IS LOOKING FOR AN ALL-OVER TYPE FACE PRODUCT. IF YOU HAVE THE FIRST ONE, I WOULD SAY SKIP THIS. IF YOU DO LOVE COLLECTING MAKEUP, IS THIS GOING TO BE A GREAT ADDITION TO YOUR COLLECTION? SURE! BUT FOR SOMEONE LIKE MYSELF, I WAS A BIT UNDERWHELMED BECAUSE I KNOW THAT I COULD EASILY FIND MOST OF THESE SHADES ELSEWHERE. BOTTOM LINE, I WAS LOOKING FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT FROM THIS SECOND VOLUME, YET IT DIDN’T DO IT FOR ME…

INFORMATION FROM TARTE’S WEBSITE:

WHAT IT IS

The all-in-one palette you asked for, stuffed with 12 silky-smooth, Amazonian clay-powered shades that play with light & shadow to #slaywithclay. It’s your can’t-live-without-it beauty wardrobe – whether you’re feeling low-key or high-key looks.

WHAT IT DOES

Sculpts, defines, & highlights your features with 12 essential, universally flattering shades. Nine neutral-to-smoky shadows (6 matte, 3 lusters) create unlimited wearable looks, while three face powders (including blush, bronzer, & highlighter) add definition & make skin glow. Each creamy, microfine powder is infused with Amazonian clay, so it offers rich payoff that blends to a natural, longwearing finish without creasing, caking, or flaking.

Shades include:

  • journey (mauve)
  • stone (mauve shimmer)
  • solstice (cream)
  • dunes (cool brown)
  • smoke (light golden shimmer)
  • sand (beige)
  • ember (warm brown)
  • onyx (copper shimmer)
  • instinct (light pink beige)
  • terracotta (matte bronze contour)
  • desert (rose blush)
  • timber (champagne highlighter)

AS YOU CAN SEE, THE SHADE NAMES HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ACTUAL COLOUR ITSELF. FROM WHAT I’VE HEARD, TARTE COSMETICS IS ACTUALLY TRYING TO “PHASE OUT” VOLUME I SO THAT THEY CAN IMPLEMENT THIS VOLUME AS THE MAIN CLAY PLAY PALETTE? I’M NOT SURE IF I BELIEVE IT, BUT THE EVIDENCE IS THERE, CONSIDERING THE PACKAGING AND MOST OF THE SHADES AND THEIR CORRESPONDING NAMES ARE THE EXACT SAME…

OVERALL THOUGHTS…

I LOVE TARTE COSMETICS. I REALLY DO. THEY’RE ONE OF MY FAVOURITE HIGH-END NATURAL BEAUTY BRANDS! A LOT OF THEIR PRODUCTS THAT I’VE TRIED HAVE BEEN ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, AND I STILL USE A LOT OF THEM TIL’ THIS DAY. I MUST SAY THOUGH, THIS CLAY PLAY VOLUME II EYE AND CHEEK PALETTE WAS A BIT UNDERWHELMING TO SAY THE LEAST.

THE FORMULA, PIGMENTATION- EVERYTHING REGARDING THAT WAS GREAT, BUT I JUST EXPECTED NEW SHADES AND DIFFERENT PACKAGING THAT WOULD DEFINITELY STAND OUT FROM THE REST OF THE PALETTES I HAVE. AT THE END OF THE DAY IT’S ALL ABOUT PERSONAL PREFERENCE. I LOVE IT… I REALLY DO, BUT IS IT NEEDED? FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS SO MANY OTHER PALETTES THAT COULD GIVE ME THE SAME TYPE OF LOOK AND EFFECT? PROBABLY NOT. AS A MAKEUP JUNKIE THOUGH, SO I WILL DEFINITELY BE KEEPING IT. IT’LL BE GREAT FOR TRAVEL THAT’S FOR SURE! WHEN I’M LOOKING FOR ONLY ONE PALETTE THAT HAS ALL THAT I NEED, SURE I’LL DEFINITELY GET SOME USE OUT OF IT.

IF YOU HAVE THE FIRST VOLUME AND ARE IN LOVE WITH MORE MATTE SHADOWS IN GENERAL AND PROBABLY HAVE SHIMMER SHADES IN YOUR COLLECTION, I WOULD SAY SKIP IT. IF YOU ARE DABBLING INTO MAKEUP AND DON’T HAVE MUCH AND NEED SOMETHING QUICK FOR ON-THE-GO AND TO USE ALL OVER THE FACE? I WOULD SAY YOU’RE NOT GOING TO REGRET THIS!

HOPE YOU ENJOYED THIS REVIEW & SWATCHES, AND I ALSO HOPE THAT I WAS ABLE TO HELP YOU WITH YOUR DECISIONS ON IF YOU’RE GOING TO GRAB IT OR NOT!

LET ME KNOW IF YOU DO! I’D LOVE TO HEAR WHAT YOU THINK!

Would you consider this palette a good alternative to the Urban Decay Naked (first one) palette? A lot of the colors seem in a similar family. Though this one would be more versatile since it also includes highlights and contours etc

    • January 16, 2018 / 9:09 pm

Some of the mattes seem similar but I don’t think this would be the best alternative! I actually don’t own that palette but I’ve seen it enough to know it probably isn’t an exact alternative. I’m thinking this would be more comparable to a more neutral/warmer palette like the Lorac unzipped palette or even the Tartlette in Bloom palette! Yeah this palette is definitely great for travel for example, because it has everything you need all in one great little product! Let me know if you decide to grab it! X

    • January 16, 2018 / 9:09 pm

The one thing I will say is that while everything is amazing, the highlighter is good as well but on the more sparkly side- just an FYI! X

    • January 17, 2018 / 2:35 am

Yes, they’re one of my favourite formulas! Let me know what you think about volume 2! <3 X

    I always love Tarte’s packaging!

    • January 17, 2018 / 3:20 pm

YES they always kill it with packaging! I do wish though that they changed it up for the second volume so I could differentiate between them more easily

  3. January 17, 2018 / 4:04 pm

oh wow this is lovely, would you say this palette works for people with soft features (ie:me), I don’t suit strong makeup but would love to try this palette, it looks so good!!

    • January 17, 2018 / 4:31 pm

YES I definitely think so as the shades in here are quite neutral not too warm! I’m sure you’d love it! X

  4. January 17, 2018 / 4:07 pm

I have always loved any product that comes from Tarte! These pallets definitely look amazing… I think I will end up purchasing both!

    • January 17, 2018 / 4:33 pm

YES do it! If you feel the need for both, go for it girl, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed! X

  5. January 17, 2018 / 4:33 pm

I love Tarte so much but I havent tried this palette yet. I think you’ve juat convinced me to though!

  6. January 17, 2018 / 6:31 pm

These palettes are beautiful! I absolutely love Tarte, but if I ever want some of their products I have to be prepared for hefty shipping. Good thing I guess otherwise my house would overflow with it and my bank balance would majorly suffer!

    • January 17, 2018 / 6:37 pm

If anything just wait for a day when they may have like free shipping or something? Or just make sure you want a lot of items at once and order so that you won’t feel as bad with that shipping? I’m glad you liked the post though, they are gorg palettes! Just depends on which one suits your needs more… and girl, I need to stop buying makeup still! Can’t seem to break away from it though.. I love my makeup. X

These colors are insanely gorgeous. Love the Vol. II palette most! 🙂

I really like Tarte, but I agree that some of the palettes are redundant. They make great gifts for a person who doesn’t own a ton of makeup, because there are so many neutral wearable shades!

    • January 17, 2018 / 7:23 pm

Yeah, I overall love Tarte- I personally buy pretty much every product they come out with but I want something different! I bet 2018 will be the year for them to change up the game! X

    • January 17, 2018 / 10:25 pm

The colours were actually quite pigmented, but it’s just the fact that there wasn’t enough for me to differentiate between the two palettes you know? That was a bit underwhelming, but I will continue to use both as I do love Tarte! X

Thank you for including the ingredients! It’s always nice to see what companies are using and what we are putting on to our skin.

    • January 18, 2018 / 6:14 am

No problem love! Whenever I’d read reviews before about products that I was interested in, I’d never see the ingredients listed anywhere! So I made it my mission to add it every time I do a blog post. I need to personally KNOW what’s going on my skin. I try to make sure that I’m using only the best ingredients so yes, it’s a very crucial aspect to any type of makeup or skincare review. Glad you liked it X
